Australian School of Cairo (ASC)

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Australian School of Cairo. Join us in Cairo and watch the students stream into a vibrant Mediterranean / Middle Eastern economy. We aim to have the happiest teachers in Cairo.

Positions presently advertised:

Australian certified preschool and lower primary teachers, September, 2009

Australian certified preschool and primary ESL coordinator, September, 2009

Information for teachers:

Our goal is to provide a superior working environment, a competitive compensation package and a respected place in our teachers’ résumés.

Cairo is a low crime city and very inviting to the newcomer. Egypt has little oil and gas income and Egyptians work hard for a living in a diversifying modern economy.

The society places great value on education and produces highly motivated students. There is great optimism in the general mood of Cairo and that optimism is well motivated – national economic liberalisation and investment from the Gulf and beyond seeing export growth rates above 25% per annum and annual general economic growth rates of over 6% for a number of years. There is a real sense of joy and “get the job done” on the Cairo street.

As Egyptian wealth grows, so does the investment of Egyptian parents in their children’s education. ASC will, in this environment, be offering a stable workplace where opportunities for professional growth will be commensurate with those a teacher might realise in Australia. Indeed, opportunities for professional growth at ASC may turn out to be better than in an average Australian workplace.

We do not presently anticipate summer terms and see some of that time as available to the teacher for continuing education. The American University in Cairo has excellent education courses, the UK is a 500 euro roundtrip away and continental European universities also have education courses that are appropriate to Australian professional advancement schedules.

General correspondence is invited from potential teachers but we ask that you first familiarise yourself with the main pages of this web site. We will start small on a quality growth model and our needs for September, 2009 are for preschool and early elementary teachers.

We presently envisage that the student-teacher ration shall be 12 to 1 or less with class size limited to about 20.

In order to establish the Australian character and curriculum of the school, Australian teachers are being most vigorously recruited for September, 2009.

Other native speakers of English with other nation teaching certification besides Australian shall be hired over time and even, perhaps, for September, 2009. But such applicants are advised that preference for September, 2009 will go to Australian certified teachers who are native speakers of English. In fact, first preference will go to such Australian teachers who grew up speaking Arabic at home. But such applicants have been rare and Australian and other native English speaking certified teachers without any knowledge of Arabic are encouraged to apply.

ASC shall work closely with teachers new to Cairo before and upon arrival to assure that suitable housing is waiting for them when they arrive. There will be a desk in the business office responsible for assisting teachers with utilities hookup, maintenance and repairs and such other aspects of housing that often frustrate the non-Arabic speaker.

ASC shall maintain a regular schedule of Arabic language instruction for its teachers who do not speak Arabic. In the beginning, these will be small class groups perhaps twice a week and geared first towards dealing with taxis (numbers, places), the needs of small children ("hurt", "scared", "thirsty") and other vocabularies that will immediately be of use to you.

Accreditation will be through one of the Australian state departments of education which will be announced once our application has run its course to acceptance. That association will not prejudice applicants from other states and territories.

Welcome to the Australian School of Cairo.
"Welcome to Egypt". You'll hear it a thousand times. And people mean it.
