Director of Education's Message
Australian School of Cairo (ASC)

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Australian School of Cairo.

As Australian education may be less familiar to you than others on offer in Cairo, I would like to take this opportunity, as Foundation Principal, to offer some insight into what makes it so unique and highly valued.  I hope this Welcome Page encourages you to contact us directly to discover more!

Children who attend our school will have the advantage of being taught through a curriculum that is one of the very best in the world and grounded in the belief that everyone is entitled to access to a quality education.  Australia’s educational standards are consistently extremely high when measured internationally and Australian educated students are offered university places in the most sought-after tertiary institutions around the world; enabled by highly qualified and dedicated teaching staff.  This is the reason why we are committed to employing teachers with Australian qualifications and experience.  Australian education reflects strongly the national culture and values which include:

  • inventiveness and highly developed problem-solving skills
  • egalitarianism
  • success through merit
  • a “fair go”
  • tolerance of diversity
  • embracing difference
  • straight-forwardness
  • loyalty
  • a belief that respect is earned
  • a balanced lifestyle
  • healthy questioning
  • respect for, but not fear of, authority
  • a self-deprecating and laconic sense of humour

These values influence every aspect of our school and support the development of learners into confident, competent, well-balanced individuals who can live fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society.  We consider that it is the right of every child to receive the best possible teaching and learning conditions for his or her particular needs.  Therefore, we are totally committed to ensuring that for each child there are high expectations coupled with focused teaching and engaged learning to ensure optimal outcomes across all areas of the curriculum.  Through this approach, all children can attain optimal personal growth and achievement given sufficient time and support through high quality teaching and care.

“It takes a whole village to raise a child”.  African proverb.

We believe children are best equipped for their future when education is the shared responsibility of the whole community; through consultation and partnership the entire school community works together for the benefit of all.

We believe that it is important to cater for the needs of the whole child; traditional school subjects and qualifications are all critically important, but the development of other qualities and skills are just as important for learners of all ages (e.g. ambition, confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, respect for others, creativity and a healthy lifestyle) and need to be fostered.  Education is a lifetime pursuit that can be realised through developing a love of learning, as well as the skills of learning.  Education plays a key role in preparing learners for their future lives, and therefore needs to be relevant to them and the world in which they live.

We recognise that you are your child’s first and long-term teachers.  As such, we value and build upon your endeavours during your child’s time at our school.  As parents ourselves, we expect to be included in the decisions made for our children and we believe it is essential to ensure this occurs for each and every child in our care.  Together, we can achieve the best outomes for your child; occurring through mutual respect, open communication and shared decision-making.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to the Australian School of Cairo community.

Best wishes,

Jo Hillman
